The Western Cape is home to one of six plant kingdoms in the world. We are privileged to have thousands of unique plant species endemic to the Western Cape and as such our wild flower honey tends to be mega floral honey.
The Western Cape is at the southern tip of Africa, where two oceans meet. The warm Indian Ocean flows down from Mozambique to collide with the Benguela current, surging up from the Antarctic. The meeting of these two oceans gives the Western Cape its unique climate and even more unique biomass.
Here we are fortunate to have a very special race of honey bee (
Apis mellifera capensis) the
Cape Honey Bee. These little creatures are well known for the worker bee's ability to temporarily lay eggs, should the queen bee be incapacitated in any way. They are also well known for an extremely high level of hygiene within the hive, which has helped them become tolerable of various hive pests and diseases, where no other bee has survived without the help of modern antibiotics.
